Bill Gates stated that the risk of severe disease from COVID-19 has dramatically decreased, but he believes another pandemic is inevitable, likely caused by a different pathogen. He emphasized the importance of making investments in medical technology now to better prepare for and fight future pandemics. Gates noted that the world has gained some level of immunity from COVID-19 as the worst effects have faded, particularly with the emergence of the omicron variant. He also highlighted the need for faster vaccine development and distribution, suggesting that next time it should take around six months rather than two years. Gates urged governments to invest in standardized platforms, such as messenger RNA technology, to achieve this. He emphasized that the cost of being ready for the next pandemic is relatively small, and called for rational action to catch it early. Gates and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have donated $300 million to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), which aims to cut the time required to develop a new vaccine to just 100 days. He suggested that this initiative and others like it are crucial for pandemic preparedness.
