A powerful 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Papua, Indonesia, with its epicenter located 162 kilometers northeast of Abepura. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers with no danger of a tsunami, according to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency. Despite the earthquake being centered on land, the agency warned of possible aftershocks. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties. Abepura, a subdistrict in Papua’s capital, Jayapura, has a population of just 62,250, making it one of Indonesia’s least populated towns. In February, the province had also experienced a shallow earthquake that resulted in the death of four people. This recent earthquake serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity.
