A powerful and shallow undersea earthquake struck part of Indonesia’s Aceh province, but no serious damage or casualties were reported. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.9, was centered 362 kilometers east of Sinabang at a depth of 10 kilometers. Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency stated that there was no threat of a tsunami, but cautioned about potential aftershocks, estimating the preliminary magnitude at 6.3. The U.S. Geological Survey and the Indonesian agency both noted that variations in initial measurements of earthquakes are typical. The earthquake, which occurred on Saturday, prompted brief concern, but no significant harm was recorded.
