In the event of a major earthquake in Japan, the country’s meteorological agencies ordered tsunami warnings along the coast following the quake. The tremor resulted in the deaths of six people, including a young boy and a man of 90 years old. Various aftershocks have been recorded since the initial big quake. More than 97,000 people in nine prefectures on the western coast of Honshu island were ordered to evacuate. The agency said that more major quakes could hit the area over the next week. However, the earthquake had no impact on nearby nuclear power stations. Authorities in the United States are ready to offer assistance to Japan after the earthquake. The quake initially resulted in a major tsunami warning in the area, but the alert was eventually downgraded to a regular tsunami advisory. The quake was the highest in the region in over 40 years, and has caused disruption in the surrounding areas.
