As of Sunday, Taiwanese had donated over NT$84.27 million (US$2.72 million) to aid Japan’s recovery from the devastating Jan. 1 earthquake. The earthquake, which measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, hit the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture and claimed the lives of at least 161 people while causing widespread damage. The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) initiated a donation program on Jan. 5 that will continue until Jan. 19. The program has received a total of 35,028 donations, amounting to over NT$84.27 million. Additionally, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs pledged to donate 60 million Japanese yen (US$418,363) on Jan. 4. People can make donations through kiosks at convenience store chains, or through Chunghwa Post or Bank of Taiwan accounts. A chart in Chinese with donation options can be found at https://www.mohw.gov.tw/cp-6672-77124-1.html. The efforts to aid Japan in its recovery from the earthquake reflect the solidarity and support of the Taiwanese people for their neighboring country during this difficult time.
