Eight-year-old bay gelding Crimson ended a 22-month winless streak by claiming his 14th career race victory on January 6, 2024. Ricardo Mathie, a newly licensed trainer, is being credited for Crimson’s win in a three-year-old and upward claiming race, where the horse competed against a field of $750,000-$600,000 prize level. Crimson’s last win was recorded on March 27, 2022, when he was still being trained by Gary Subratie. After a disappointing 2022 racing season and 14 winless starts in 2023, Subratie grew frustrated with Crimson’s performance. But it only took Mathie less than a month to help Crimson regain his form. Mathie claimed Crimson after the horse had been raced at lower claiming levels by Subratie, and the change proved successful. Under the command of jockey Bebeto Harvey, Crimson outbattled Storm by half a length over a seven-furlong distance, clocking in at 1:28.1. The victory marked a triumphant turnaround for the aging racehorse and a delightful success for Mathie, as Crimson defied the odds against him to once again prove his abilities on the track.
