Overnight rain on Tuesday caused significant flooding in downtown Vineyard Haven and parts of Edgartown. Local businesses in Tisbury were forced to close due to flooding, and sandbags were used to keep water out of Stop and Shop on Water Street. Traffic on Beach Road in Tisbury was limited to trucks and other elevated vehicles, and Five Corners was flooded with several inches of water. The National Weather Service reported 2.3 inches of rain at the Vineyard airport weather station, overwhelming storm drains in Tisbury. Tisbury DPW director Kirk Metell stated that the flooding was particularly bad and that water had accumulated in areas that normally drain easily. This is the second strong storm to hit the region in recent weeks, although the winds were not as severe as in the December storm. However, the flooding during this storm appears to be worse.
