Torrential rains in Rio de Janeiro caused flooding, landslides, and at least seven deaths overnight into Sunday. Water from the storm reached the roofs of cars on some stretches of Avenida de Brasil. A man died in a landslide, a woman drowned, and one woman is reported missing. Twelve bus lines and several metro stations were shut down due to water on the tracks. Some parts of the city received a month’s worth of rain typical in January in just 24 hours. Mayor Eduardo Paes urged people to stay at home on Sunday to avoid disrupting rescue and recovery efforts. A national agency warned of high risk of landslides in eight towns in surrounding Rio de Janeiro state.
